This course introduces learners to
essential computer skills and maintenance practices to build confidence in
using technology. Students will begin with the basics of getting started on a
computer, using built-in help functions, undoing mistakes, and understanding
file extensions. They will also explore how to download and upload files,
identify safe free software, understand the differences between open source and
closed source programs, and work with PDF files. The course continues with
setup and maintenance skills, including updating software, customizing desktop
backgrounds, handling viruses, power cycling devices, managing startup
applications, keeping older computers running smoothly, speeding up
performance, defragmenting hard drives, and starting in safe mode. Finally,
students will gain hands-on practice with installing and uninstalling software
on both Windows and Mac systems. By the end, participants will be equipped with
practical knowledge to operate, customize, and maintain their computers effectively.
